India is witnessing strong growth for Made-in-India vehicles: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): India's automotive sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience and momentum, recording a stellar 23% year-on-year growth in the passenger vehicle market for May 2026.

Data released indicated that nearly 4.4 lakh units were sold during the month, a performance credited to robust domestic demand and the strengthening of the 'Make in India' manufacturing ecosystem.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, in a post on X, lauded the performance as a testament to growing consumer confidence and the nation's industrial aspirations.

'India's passenger vehicle market clocked nearly 4.4 lakh units in May 2026, registering 23% year-on-year growth, led by @Maruti_Corp, @TataMotors, and @Mahindra_Auto, reflecting strong consumer demand despite global uncertainties,' said Goyal.

He said. 'The robust demand for Made-in-India vehicles reflects growing consumer confidence, a thriving manufacturing ecosystem, and the transformative impact of PM @NarendraModi Ji's Make in India vision.'

He further noted, 'The journey towards Viksit Bharat is being driven by innovation, enterprise, and the aspirations of 140 crore Indians.'

In May 2026, major auto companies - including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Toyota posted robust sales figures on sustained domestic demand and solid performance across their respective passenger and commercial vehicle segments.

Maruti sold a total of 242,688 units in May 2026, achieving an all-time high in domestic sales at 193,535 units. Additionally, sales to other OEMs stood at 7,239 units, while export sales reached 41,914 units for the month.

Hyundai Motor posted a 9.1 per cent year-on-year growth in its domestic sales, moving 47,837 units in May 2026. It exported 13,300 units, bringing its total monthly sales to 61,137 units.

On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited announced that its overall auto sales, including exports, reached 99,636 vehicles in May 2026, reflecting a 20 per cent growth. Domestic commercial vehicle sales grew by 19 per cent, that stood at 24,079 units.

The company sold 58,021 vehicles in the domestic market in its utility segment, reflecting an 11 per cent increase, and 59,573 vehicles globally when factoring in exports.

In the agricultural segment, Mahindra's Farm Equipment Business posted a 23 per cent YoY growth led by the sale of 47,845 tractors in the domestic market, as compared to 38,914 units in May 2025. Total tractor sales for the month came at 49,695 units, while exports for the month stood at 1,850 units. (ANI)
